SACRED CORNER

'He that knows not, and knows that
he knows not, - is simple - teach him
He that knows and knows not that
he knows - is asleep - wake him
He that knows and knows that
he knows - is a wise man - follow him.

Dear Parents & Children,

This noteworthy Arab proverb has set me thinking. 'The heart of a man runs deep' remarked a sage in regard of our present spiritual situation.

We all passionately purse our private quest. We aggressively chase a thousand things without understanding. But at unguarded moments, the soul seeks for solutions.

To make this point clear I would like to take an example used by Ramesh Richard in his book.

The simple joy that we experience with our first toy. For a while we enjoy it, play with it and even love doing so. Our enthusiasm for it lingers even after the first scratch. But then we see the next version of the same play thing - better and fancier. Your neighbour has just bought it. The desire to get that will attack us!

The question that arises here is if pleasure, power, possessions or prestige could satiate our desires - the world would have become a peaceful place a long time ago. Why then does the hunder linger ?

As a teacher, many such questions need to be answered. My quest on this philosophical path has helped me grow as an individual.

This Sacred Corner on the School Website is an earnest endeavor by all of us at D.P.S. Vasant Kunj to move towards building an enlightened society.

Below you will find a few lines of a poem given to me by a friend. These lines have completely changed my perspective towards life and made me more appreciative of all its gifts. Do share this with your friends and well wishers

THE INTERVIEW WITH GOD

I dreamed I had an interview with God.

“So you would like to interview me?” God asked.

“If you have the time” I said.

God smiled. “My time is eternity.”
“What questions do you have in mind for me?”

“What surprises you most about humankind?”

God answered...
“That they get bored with childhood,
they rush to grow up, and then
long to be children again.”

“That they lose their health to make money...
and then lose their money to restore their health.”

“That by thinking anxiously about the future,
they forget the present,
such that they live in neither
the present nor the future.”

"That they live as if they will never die,
and die as though they had never lived.”

God’s hand took mine
and we were silent for a while.

And then I asked...
“As a parent, what are some of life’s lessons
you want your children to learn?”

“To learn they cannot make anyone
love them. All they can do
is let themselves be loved.”

“To learn that it is not good
to compare themselves to others.”

“To learn to forgive
by practicing forgiveness.”

“To learn that it only takes a few seconds
to open profound wounds in those they love,
and it can take many years to heal them.”

“To learn that a rich person
is not one who has the most,
but is one who needs the least.”

“To learn that there are people
who love them dearly,
but simply have not yet learned
how to express or show their feelings.”

“To learn that two people can
look at the same thing
and see it differently.”

“To learn that it is not enough that they
forgive one another, but they must also forgive themselves.”

"Thank you for your time," I said humbly.

"Is there anything else
you would like your children to know?"

God smiled and said,
“Just know that I am here... always.”
