'Jagrit' is an ongoing
programme of the DPS Society with the objective
to spread awareness not only to the urban youth
but also to the marginalized sections of
society.
The programme started with an HIV/AIDS
Awareness
Camp in April 2004, Where 300 students &
teachers were trained as Peer Educators and
Teacher Facilitators from all DPS schools across
the country as well as Kendriya Vidyalayas
(Govt. Schools) from Delhi .Their mission was to
rid this country of HIV virus that is spreading
rapidly, especially among the youth.
With a strength of nearly 2.50 lakh students &
five lakh parents, the DPS Society, each year,
reaffirms its determination to equip young
people studying in all of the 157 DPS schools
across the globe, with knowledge & skills that
will nurture them into responsible & global
citizens.
DPS Society, being one of the largest school
systems, has taken the responsibility of
spreading HIV/AIDS Awareness across the country
& help bring about a healthy social fabric.
The Red Ribbon
The Red Ribbon is
the internationally recognized symbol for AIDS
that symbolizes peace & support, for those who
are infected with HIV & even those who have lost
their lives because of it.
World Aids Day
- A note by the Peer Educators-
The 1st of Dec is celebrated as "World Aids
Day." The international day of action on
HIV/AIDS.
This day & infact, everyday is an opportunity
for people worldwide to unite in the fight
against the deadly virus.
HIV/AIDS is a great plague upon all humanity
that has already claimed the lives of over 23
million men, women & children.
With an estimated 40 million currently living
with HIV around the globe, all current
predictions tell us that this is just the
beginning of the epidemic!
An AIDS awareness week had been organized in our
school by the peer educators, trained by Jagrit-an
ongoing programme of the DPS Society with the
objective to spread awareness not only to urban
people but also to the marginalized sections of
society.
Through our programme last week, we attempted to
heighten the awareness level & inspire action
against HIV/AIDS. This was done by conducting
various workshops, discussions & activities.
Our aim in doing so was to equip the students
with knowledge & ability to take swift &
creative action to address the dangers of the
disease rampant within.
As peer educators, it was satisfying to realize
that we can play a pivotal role in chnaging many
lives.
This has made us deeply conscious of the
necessity to ensure a safer future for our
society & also made us realize that it is a long
battle to wage.
We may have begun the journey but miles need to
be traversed. We believe that, with the school's
constant support & encouragement & also the
students' cooperation, we will succeed in
promoting awareness & encourage empathy amongst
our peers.
Thank you & have a nice day.
