Adolescence Workshop Report

Twenty-seven percent of Indian's population is in the adolescent bracket i.e. between 13 and 19 years of age. This young population is seen as a window of opportunity that would take the country on the path of rapid development. However, if not nurtured properly their valuable resource can prove to be unproductive. Expert guidance is a valuable input in such nurturing and providing it are Dr. Jitendra Nagpal, Dr. Divya S.Prasad and Ms. Arshiya Sethi. It was our privilege that they helped in a workshop, on adolescence in school from the 28th of August to 1st of September 2006.

Adolescence is a period of storm and stress and has become of great concern in the current changing times. The students, during the workshop, talked about how psychological development depends upon the culture and community we belong to. They discussed how rural adolescent are different from their urban counterparts. Also, the students expressed how they felt stressed and how they coped with it. Peer pressure was also extensively discussed. A skit was put up by volunteers from the participants to show the pro's and cons of peer pressure. One of the major issues to be brought up during the interactive session was the Generation Gap between parents and children . Many felt that lack of time spent with parents was one of the biggest factors contributing to the 'generation gap'. Some students also said that what is termed as rebellion by parents is in fact a difference in opinion.

The forth day of the workshop was dedicated to substance abuse. The workshop commenced with the answering of questions such as " What is a drug?" and "What is substance abuse?" The students were told about drugs and how they are harmful . In a nationwide survey alcohol was formed to be the drug with the highest consumption with a large percentage of the people having tried alcohol under the age of eighteen. The students were told about the behaviour of people under the influence of substances and how their actions often lead to the body being harmed. They were also told how drugs led to malnutrition and so increased susceptibility to infections. They then discussed the reason people resort to drugs. Issues such as peer pressure, curiosity, rebellion, frustration and boredom were brought up. Students were told how they could prevent themselves from falling prey to the curse of substance abuse and also that rehabilitation centers should not be consider a cure as 80% of people get a relapse after it.

To make the work shop more interesting and inter house street play competition and an inter house debate were also organized. The houses picked up different topics associated with adolescent and performed skits on them. The topic for the debate was "Peer pressure brings out the best in us." Kudos to the peer counselors - Pranav Sawhney (XI-H), Akansha Khoka and Tanya Bhardwaj (XI-E) for organizing a superb and educational interactive workshop.

The Janmashtmi assembly was held on 18th August by the students of class I. The highlight of the day was a Kathak Dance performance given by nearly 20 students on the 16th century song written by Wazid Ali Shah. The words were "Baju Band Khul Khul Jaye..."  depicting the raas of Lord Krishna. The glimpses of Krishna's Life were shown in the form of tableaux. The children sang songs depicting the same. The children were surprised when the principal, Mr. Vinay Kumar, wished all of them a happy birthday. He explained to them affectionately that he sees a Krishna in each one of them.  This short and crisp assembly was able to convey the message of Lord Krishna to the little ones.
